The upgrade of an item allows players to boost an item's gear score up to 700 and also add a final perk. Items can be upgraded by keeping them in inventory and heading to the kiln.

The Champion Leathers, for example can be upgraded to an increase of 5 defense rating, which will allow you to keep up in cold environments with a lot of enemies. The Snowquill Headdress, on the other side, can be upgraded to +20 defense, which means you can survive a raid with your comrades.
It's important to note that armor cannot be upgraded in the same manner as weapons, so you'll want to work on enhancing it to increase physical power if you're a Warrior or Spell Power if you're Mage. It is also recommended to save your armor upgrades to upgrade the armor you'll still be wearing at the end of the story, like the Ring of Lightning, Spectral Shield or the mask you wear in the final boss fight The Monter Parts Merchant Mask.

Players should upgrade their most essential items first.
